Five Alternatives to PowerPoint or Keynote
For people who either use Macs or do not want to pay to buy iWork or Microsoft Office, here are five presentation tools you can use:
1. Open Office – If you want a program that you can use offline. This is a great option. It is almost a clone of Powerpoint. You can even create a file and save it as a Powerpoint file. This is an open-source program so it is free. You can use it on PC or Mac. You can create it and present it all from Open Office. You can also create the file, export it as a Powerpoint file, and play it on Powerpoint. Cost: Free
2. Google Docs – A very good online alternative to Powerpoint. You won’t be able to do everything, but you can do enough and make a very good presentation. You can also make a presentation in Powerpoint, upload it to Google Docs, and present the information from Docs. This is an okay option, but not recommended. I use this to hold my Powerpoint documents so I have access to them. Cost: Free.
3. Zoho Show – It’s a lot like Google Docs. People have told me it is a little better than Google Docs. Admittedly, I’ve used Docs more than Zoho. I do have a Zoho account and this seems okay. It is worth a look, if you are interested. Cost: Free
4. Office Web Apps – Microsoft is about to launch this as a part of their Office 2010. From what I have heard, this will be better than Google Docs and Zoho. You can keep your files secure in the cloud, create new files, etc. You can get a preview and possibly be a Beta tester for the new product here. The only catch is the cost. I have been told that it will be free. But I have not heard anything from Microsoft.
5. Prezi – This is what I will be showing with all of my presentations. It is free, but there is a catch. I really can not explain the concept to you, but you would have to see it to believe it. It is the only option that costs money. It’s worth it, but try it out first.
