How to Improve Doing Something People Hate

Being Better at Presentations: Think More, Plan More, Don’t Touch a Computer

When creating Powerpoint or Keynote presentations, one useful tip is to storyboard the presentation.

Think about how you want to structure the presentation before you touch a computer. If you want to have pictures, assemble the pictures. If you want to use videos, find the videos.

If you only have words and numbers, you will want to plan that as well. How do you want to give this information to the audience?

Ask yourself how many slides do I want and what do I want on the slides?

You do not need the presentation written out word for word. But you should have a general idea about what you want to do and say.

Nancy Duarte’s book Slide:ology says that time should be invested in planning and scripting Powerpoint/Keynote presentations. Duarte is the same women who developed Al Gore’s presentation that became “An Inconvenient Truth”.

Planning in advance makes it easier to eliminate mistakes or uncover problems while you are sitting in front of the computer.

When I do not do this, I can have as many as 35-40 slides in a 20 minutes presentation. Good planning can cut more than half of those slides.
